Sunset over Skiddaw

Description

The setting sun over Skiddaw, one of the great giants of the Lakeland fells, feels like the closing of a vast, quiet theatre. As the light dips westward, the bulk of Skiddaw—its long, sweeping back and ridgeline—becomes etched in deepening shadow. The crags and slopes take on a soft purple-blue haze, while the summit ridge often glows with a fleeting burnish of gold and amber.

To the west, the sky unfurls in bands of fiery orange and rose, fading gently into lilac and softening blues as evening gathers. The last sunlight brushes the heather and bracken, igniting warm tones across the lower slopes, while Derwentwater below mirrors the colours with glassy ripples of molten gold.

There’s a stillness in the air at this hour, broken only by the faint cry of a curlew or the distant rustle of the evening breeze across the grasses. The fells around—Latrigg, Blencathra, and the distant ridges—stand in layered silhouette, each ridge a shade darker than the last, receding into the haze.

It’s a moment where grandeur and calm meet: Skiddaw, ancient and steadfast, standing watch beneath a sky painted by the sun’s last breath of fire.
