Bank vole

Description

The bank vole is a small, endearing woodland rodent commonly found across the UK and much of Europe. It has a warm, chestnut-brown coat with a soft grey underside, giving it a subtly two-toned appearance that blends beautifully into leaf litter and forest floors. Its rounded ears, dark bead-like eyes, and blunt snout give it a gentle, curious expression.

Typically active at dawn and dusk, the bank vole moves in quick, darting bursts through undergrowth, often pausing to nibble on seeds, berries, roots, and fungi. Unlike some of its relatives, it has a relatively short tail and a more compact, stocky body, which helps distinguish it in the field.

In photography, the bank vole adds a sense of quiet intimacy and wild charm—an understated subject that captures the delicate, often overlooked life of woodland ecosystems.
