Maryport harbour
Description
Founded in the mid‑1700s by Humphrey Senhouse to serve the booming coal trade, Maryport was named after his wife, Mary . It grew rapidly, adding shipyards (1780, 1810), piers, and iron foundries—all powered by coal, iron, and maritime commerce .
The Elizabeth Dock (1857) and later Senhouse Dock (1884) made it a hub for sizeable ships .
