Mouse (wood mouse)
Description
A small field mouse emerges cautiously from the rough stone wall at the foot of the Lakeland fells. The morning air is damp with mist, and the grass around its doorway glistens with dew. Just beyond the tiny archway in the stones, a slice of bread rests pale against the dark earth.
The mouse pauses, whiskers twitching, its dark eyes bright with both fear and hunger. Its fur, the colour of dry bracken and soil, is puffed slightly against the chill. The bread looms like an improbable prize—bigger than the mouse itself, smelling faintly of yeast and comfort, utterly out of place in the rugged setting.
It edges forward, paws soft against the moss, every movement sharp with hesitation. The fells rise steeply above, silent and immense, but here at the wall’s base the little drama plays out: a creature no larger than a man’s fist weighing the risks of open ground against the promise of a feast.
