Maryport harbour

Description

Founded in the mid‑1700s by Humphrey Senhouse to serve the booming coal trade, Maryport was named after his wife, Mary . It grew rapidly, adding shipyards (1780, 1810), piers, and iron foundries—all powered by coal, iron, and maritime commerce  .

The Elizabeth Dock (1857) and later Senhouse Dock (1884) made it a hub for sizeable ships  .
